Module overview

Building on work from Level 4, this module is designed to appreciate and explore the vocal and physical demands placed on the performer in any given space.

It is founded upon a commitment to the integration of the physical and vocal techniques necessary to the musical theatre industry.  Texts studied include poetry and techniques of impersonation vocally, whilst musically; repertoire will be more advanced with regard to vocal demands, context and narrative. Students are required to explore the emotional, physical and vocal responses to music and text, expressing a delivery that brings together a sense of truth founded on appropriate technical skills.

Students will have 2 1hour voice tutorials across the semester. 

Module aims

The module aims to focus at an extended level within the second year of study to increase the core technique and competencies in Voice and Dance. Looking at range of skills including, Singing (Solo and group) as well as Ballet, Jazz and Tap. This module runs alongside Acting Workshop 1 and extends the physical skills which can be applied within that module as well as being a core grounding that leads to Level 6 projects

Module content

Singing will cover extending the core technique from Level 4. Looking at extending and encouraging and enabling the student to extend and deepen their understanding and performance capability.

The Vocal portion of the module looks to extend core technique, and looks at the application of knowledge in praxis with the assessment.

The Dance portion of the module enables students to extend core technique in ballet, jazz and tap and to apply those styles to a wider range of choreographic situations.

Across the semester this module is delivered over 150 hours study across the semester

Throughout the module different learning and teaching strategies are applied to enable students to achieve the learning outcomes, including research, reflective practice, peer to peer learning and formative assessment with written feedback.

 

In depth.


The approach of the module is vocational in content and delivery and encourages students to participate in reflection on their own practice, independent study and research and embeds the concepts of peer to peer feedback within the rehearsal room. Students are encouraged to utilise materials on SURREY LEARN and also receive individual tutorials from staff to help in forming their learning experience.
Students receive regular verbal feedback both individually and as a group during each class which they are encouraged to journal within the reflection time which is built in to the lesson plan every week.
Students are encouraged to self-assess and peer-assess within the class structure and as part of the ethos of training as an actor.
 Lesson plans are structured to take account of and deliver for students with a specifc bias toward visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning enabling differentation of techniques within the class.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate clear progress and autonomy in taking responsibility for their vocal health, progress and technique.

Formative Assessment & Feedback

Each class sequentially builds toward the assessment and throughout individual learning outcomes are covered by tutors and students receive regular verbal feedback individually and as a group during each class which they are encouraged to journal within the reflection time which is built in to the lesson plan every week. Students are encouraged to self-assess and peer-assess within the class structure which becomes a valuable strategy for visual, auditory and kinaesthetic  learning. Students receive summative feedback within 3weeks of the assessment taking place and this is received through SURREYLEARN or directly from Registry.
