Module overview

Building on work from Level 5 Semester 1 this module is designed to deepen understanding of the vocal and physical demands placed on the performer as an actor/musician.

It is founded upon a commitment to the integration of the physical and vocal techniques necessary to the theatre industry.  Work looks at individual singing, ensemble singing, individual vocal technique in spoken text and regular dance classes in ballet, tap and jazz.

Module aims

A secure, systematic and healthy personal technique in voice and dance

To enable the student to produce a variety of work in dance and vocal work

To increase knowledge of dramatic texts which are more complex and vocally demanding in nature

The ability to project the voice and realise dance in performance contexts.

Building upon the fundamental aspects of singing, begin developing vocal agility and elasticity of the instrument to employ more advanced technique

Continuing to apply performance skills in a secure and assured way.

Module content

Specific will helps students develop a collection of repertoire specific to them. Practical Voice work continues to further develop and enhance the students understanding of grounding centring and alignment explored at Level 4 but introduces the concept of working with challenging text and how we learn rhythm, intention and patterns of speech through impersonation

Singing continues with Small Group Singing working on technique whilst Ensemble Singing extends and integrates actor musicianship and accompaniment within class and assessment. Students will have two one hour tutorials across the semester as a singer individually to address specific concerns and individual technique.

Across the semester this module is delivered over 150 hours study across the semester

Throughout the module different learning and teaching strategies are applied to enable students to achieve the learning outcomes, including research, reflective practice, peer to peer learning and formative assessment with written feedback.

In depth.


The approach of the module is vocational in content and delivery and encourages students to participate in reflection on their own practice, independent study and research and embeds the concepts of peer to peer feedback within the rehearsal room. Students are encouraged to utilise materials on SURREY LEARN and also receive individual tutorials from staff to help in forming their learning experience.
Students receive regular verbal feedback both individually and as a group during each class which they are encouraged to journal within the reflection time which is built in to the lesson plan every week.
Students are encouraged to self-assess and peer-assess within the class structure and as part of the ethos of training as an actor.
 Lesson plans are structured to take account of and deliver for students with a specific bias toward visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning enabling differentation of techniques within the class.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate clear progress and autonomy in taking responsibility for their vocal health, progress and technique.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT & FEEDBACK

Each class sequentially builds toward the assessment and throughout individual learning outcomes are covered by tutors and students receive regular verbal feedback individually and as a group during each class which they are encouraged to journal within the reflection time which is built in to the lesson plan every week. Students are encouraged to self-assess and peer-assess within the class structure which becomes a valuable strategy for visual, auditory and kinaesthetic  learning. Students receive summative feedback within 3weeks of the assessment taking place and this is received through SURREYLEARN or directly from Registry.
