Module overview


Third year module for Automotive Engineering students

The process of managing the entire lifecycle of a product from inception to manufacture is described through the use of a product lifecycle management (PLM) tool. Advanced CAD strategies of CATIA V5 for parametric-associative design of components and assemblies are explained and implemented with several examples. Knowledge-based engineering methodologies such as the integration of mathematical relationships are described and applied for design automation. Manufacturing-specific aspects are considered during component design and demonstrated through rapid prototype/CNC manufacturing of components. The concept of virtual product testing is introduced through several examples of integrated FE/CFD simulations.

Module content

Indicative content includes: 


Product lifecycle management (PLM) systems
Strategies for parametric-associative 3D CAD design
Knowledge-based engineering
CAM methods: CNC machining and rapid prototype
Virtual testing through integration with FE/CFD simulations

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

Introduce CAD/CAM principles through worked examples. This is delivered principally through lectures and tutorial classes and concludes with an independently conducted mini design project involving basic design, analysis procedures and manufacturing preparation.

The learning and teaching methods include:


2 hour lecture per week x 11 weeks
2 hour tutorial (in groups) x 11 weeks
Coursework project (12 hours)
Mini design project (18 hours)

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate understanding of principles and methodologies as well as the ability to develop product structures and processes. The coursework element allows students to demonstrate that they can interpret a problem and present a solution clearly and accurately. The mini design project tests research skills and report writing as well as their ability to design a simple component such that it can be manufactured and made ready for physical test..

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
