Prerequisites / Co-requisites

It is desirable to have some understanding of the behaviour of structures under horizontal and vertical loads, and how external actions induce internal effects. It is essential that the students have a knowhow of the type of stresses (i.e. axial and shear stresses due to axial, bending, shear and torsional load), which are induced by the external loads and how to quantify them for the design of structural elements.  

Module overview

Bridge deck loading and analysis is explained in this module. Emphasis is given to the following four objectives of the module, that inherently include design for longevity and sustainability of bridges:

Loading of bridge decks:

Type of actions. Primary and secondary traffic loads for highway, railway and footbridges. Wind and water actions. Temperature and shrinkage effects. Application of the actions to get the most unfavourable action effects. Combination of actions. Partial safety factors for various serviceability and ultimate limit states.

Analysis of bridge decks:

Types of bridge decks and their behaviour. Analysis for square and skew decks, isolated and integral bridges. Load distribution methods. Use of influence lines and hand based methods for analysis. Global analysis using grillage and FEM (finite element methods). Local analysis using influence surfaces and finite elements.

Practice:

Examples of load applications to current design codes and standards. Analysis of bridge decks using various hand based, and computer based methods through tutorial sessions, and formative assessments.

Use of computer software packages to analyse bridge behaviour.

Module aims

To promote an understanding of the type and representation of actions (models), pertinent to bridge structures, and methods to quantify these for the analysis of bridges.

To promote an understanding of the methods of analysis used to determine the action effects, stress resultants and displacements, in a range of bridge superstructures.

Module content

Loading:

Type of actions. Vertical and lateral loads. Main and secondary traffic loads for highway, railway and footbridges. Self-weight, permanent, prestress, creep and shrinkage, settlement, temperature, variable and accidental actions. Application of the loads. Safety factors. Combination and reduction factors for the serviceability and ultimate limit states.

Analysis:

Types of bridge decks and their behaviour. Analysis for straight and skew decks, analysis of isolated and integral bridges. Load distribution methods. Use of influence lines and hand based analysis methods for analysis. Global analysis using grillage and finite element methods. Local analysis using influence surfaces and finite element analysis.

Practice:

Examples of load applications to Eurocode 1 Part 3 (1991); Analysis of Bridge decks using various hand-based, and computer based methods through tutorial sessions, and formative assessments (self and peer assessment) and summative assessments.

Practical Content:


Use of computer software packages to analyse bridge decks.
Use of hand calculations to validate FEM models
Use of Putcher charts and moment distribution method to calculate simplified bridge static systems
Use of influence lines to calculate worst credible bending moment
Use of CAD software to draw loads on longitudinal and transverse deck sections

Methods of Teaching / Learning

30 hrs teacher contact time (including 10 hours of tutorials), 40 hrs of assignment work (includes a bridge analysis assignment), 2 hrs of Final Examination, 78 hrs independent learning / self and Peer assessment questions.

Total student learning time 150 hours.

Assessment Strategy

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

·         Examination (2 hours) {75%}

·         Assignment: Loading and analysis of a real three-span bridge {25%}

Formative assessment and feedback

Formative assessment will be through a range of peer assessment exercises provided on SurreyLearn. These exercises will provide automatic feedback where necessary.

Students will receive written feedback on their assignments as well as verbal feedback. Both verbal and written feedback will be provided on the peer assessment task.
