Module overview

This module is an elective module which will provide a comprehensive overview of the many corrosion processes occurring for different materials in various environments. The fundamental thermodynamic and electrochemical mechanisms driving corrosion and high temperature oxidation are initially presented. The three generic forms of corrosion: uniform, local and galvanic corrosion are described. This is followed by consideration of specific corrosion processes, appropriate material selection and corrosion control methods for environments of particular technologically interest (e.g. marine, oil and gas, high temperature industrial, aeronautical). The corrosion control methods include the use of coatings, paints, corrosion inhibitors and electrochemical techniques. Methods for studying corrosion mechanisms and processes both on a laboratory and industrial scale are also detailed.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

Introduce corrosion fundamentals through theory and practical examples. This is achieved principally though lectures (academics and industrialists), laboratory demonstrations and visit to a working corrosion/electrochemistry/failure analysis laboratory in an industrial environment, including discussions with corrosion specialists.

The learning and teaching methods include:

The teaching is delivered as a one-week intensive course.

Assessment Strategy

The short questions are able to test knowledge and understanding of a broad range of topics covered in the module. The 2 longer questions are aimed at assessing the knowledge of specific chosen topics and depth of understanding expected at this level on the fundamentals of corrosion processes and application of corrosion control methods.

Formative verbal feedback is given in lectures and tutorials.
Written feedback is given on the first assessment coursework (Q1 & Q2), which is submitted in advance of the final summative assessment.
