Module overview

This module allows students to build on the knowledge and skills gained in Documentary Practice I and develop skills in presenting ideas and analysis in the form of a video documentary.

Module aims

provide students with an opportunity to select and carry out an in depth study of a topic appropriate for documentary film treatment

enhance students' understanding of documentary research methodologies

foster the skills and understandings necessary to develop and produce a documentary film from concept to completion

enhance students' understanding of relevant film making techniques, modes and methodologies

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

Enable students to produce a 20-25 minute documentary by guiding them through the process of


Writing a proposal
Researching their topic and developing their idea (including keeping a notebook)
Production (including clearances)
Post production (including screening various cuts)
Evaluation (description of the learning process)


 

The learning and teaching methods include:

 


Group and individual tutorials.
Independent film production

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their achievement of the learning outcomes for this module.

 

 

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:


An 20-25 minute film
A 3000-word evaluation on the production of the film and the completed film submitted at the same time as the completed film
A proposal and outline submitted during semester 1


 

Formative assessment


At 5 key stages of the process including draft proposal, schedule, edit plan, rough assembly, fine cut (if completed in time)


 

Feedback

 

Verbal feedback delivered at 1-1 tutorials at the 5 key stages of formative assessment.
