Alternative Assessment

In the event of student being unable to complete all or any specific component of the module a practical resit opportunity will be arranged. The re-sit will consist of a verse monologue from Shakespeare and a dramatic song that is intended to be performed as audience address.To be determined by the unit/component that is incomplete.

Prerequisites / Co-requisites

A student will have been required to have progressed from Level 4 and Acting 1 and Acting 2 to have been passed and completed. 

Module overview

The aim of this unit is to allow students the class/workshop time to apply and extend analytical technique studied at Level 4 into a process that equips them for the challenges of creating and sustaining character within the confines of text

1. Rehearsal & Performance

In this unit of the module students will focus on the application of practitioner study in praxis and the application of acting theory through song and scenes and specifically Musical Theatre naturalism and ensemble work.

Through a process of rehearsal/workshops students will work on extended sequences from an extant text and create a performance that demonstrates the key concepts of naturalism in front of and working as both ensemble and protagonist in a truthful way in front of an audience.

2:  Contemporary Acting – Screen Acting

In terms of the wider programme the Acting module develops creative technique and approaches to realise text that prepare a student for the work undertaken at Level 6 allowing them to explore their technique and develop their own methodological approach to their work. The screen component adds explores other skills that equip a student with technique to be able to communicate and portray truthful characters for an audience on camera.

Module aims

Acting Technique is a key component of the BA (Hons) Musical Theatre exploring and consolidating the fundamentals of a range of study and practitioner theory and enabling the student to realise the theory and class based work in praxis.

Throughout the module students develop contemporary acting techniques and methods to support their process in playing contemporary and classical text, with a class specifically designed to be an in depth study of scenes and characters from major classical plays to assist students in applying the theory in practice.

In the second unit the module aims to introduce students to the process of working in rehearsal to a full final public performance. The module is intended to be a practical integration of all the varying skills that students have studied across Level 4 and Level 5 in a practical and supportive tutor/director led process.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

Place an emphasis on the practical development of skills that are required for extended and best practice in the profession.

To enable students to acquire skills in character building, physical presence and intention in the space all of which lead on to a firm foundation moving toward the study of acting at Level 5.

The learning and teaching methods include:

Across the semester this module is delivered over 150 hours study across the semester

Throughout the module different learning and teaching strategies are applied to enable students to achieve the learning outcomes, including research, reflective practice, peer to peer learning and formative assessment with written feedback.

The approach of the module is vocational in content and delivery and encourages students to participate in reflection on their own practice, independent study and research and embeds the concepts of peer to peer feedback within the rehearsal room. Students are encouraged to utilise materials on SURREY LEARN and also receive individual tutorials from staff to help in forming their learning experience.
Students receive regular verbal feedback both individually and as a group during each class which they are encouraged to journal within the reflection time which is built in to the lesson plan every week.
Students are encouraged to self-assess and peer-assess within the class structure and as part of the ethos of training as an actor.
 Lesson plans are structured to take account of and deliver for students with a specifc bias toward visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning enabling differentation of techniques within the class.
