Module overview

This module represents a mid-term (up-to 6 weeks) investigation within industry, in a professional context appropriate to students' Specialist Subject Pathways.

Building upon the student’s development through levels four and five, the module is designed to enable the student to research, source and arrange  significant industry connections focusing on their core areas of interest and ambition. Students will be able to develop their knowledge and understanding of contemporary practice, hone professional and transferable skills and significantly advance their Professional Development Planning.

Broaden students' knowledge and understanding of those sectors relevant to their Specialist Subject Pathway

To equip students to make the transition from education to professional work by developing transferable skills and employability

To enable the student to evaluate and reflect on the placement within the context of previous experience and future aspirations

Module content

Indicative content includes:


Overview and discussion of current landscape in relation to the creative industries.
Skills assessment and development; widening opportunity through identification of new and emerging technologies and practice.
Professional Development Planning; next stages.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to expand their learning into the professional context external to the university, whilst meeting the programme’s aims of developing student employability and engaging with contemporary practice

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:


Enable the student to explore aspects of contemporary practice in their chosen subject area.
Enable the student to evaluate their own skills and aspirations in a professional context.
Prompt further independent study and research within their chosen subject pathway.
Enable students to explore the work of industry practitioners and peers and record new learning and exploration for future reference


The learning and teaching methods include:


Introductory seminar: 3 hours at end of Level 5 onset of module.
Tutorials: 2 x 20 minute tutorials per student, during duration of study and one further group seminar to develop presentation skills prior to delivery of findings. Independent research. Into key developments in the student’s chosen pathway
Compilation of Placement Notebook as learning and reference tool.
Independent study towards assessed presentation.


The Learning and Teaching strategy is designed to address core Programme Learning and Teaching strategies specifically those relating to resource-based learning, the participation of professional practitioners, self-directed methods of learning.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate;


Understanding of contemporary practice within industry (L/Os 1,3)
Considered evaluation of their own Professional Development Plan (L/Os 3,4)
Evidence a range of transferable skills within the areas of employability and professionalism (1,2)


 

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

 

Placement Notebook:


A compilation of notes and subsequent personal research evidencing engagement and independent study including a detailed Personal Development Plan. (A full Assignment brief is produced in relation to this written work)



The Placement Notebook should normally be submitted after the placement and during standard Semester submission period (Wks 13-15).  Written feedback for the Production Notebook will normally be available 3 weeks after formal submission and assessment


 

Presentation

An 8-10 minute presentation detailing a critical development in the theatre or entertainment industry and its potential impact upon current working practice.

 

Formative assessment and feedback

 

Formative assessment (verbal feedback) will be provided during tutorials with the student’s subject tutor who will oversee the placement period.  It may also be informally provided by the placement supervisor during the placement. 

The placement supervisor will also be asked to provide formative written feedback to the student immediately following the placement period.
