Module overview

This module will deepen students understanding of theories, methods and findings of studies in perception and cognition.   Through attending a series of lectures and tutorials students will acquire knowledge in the area and practise critiquing given pieces of research and developing research ideas.

To learn to use your knowledge of cognitive psychology to form a persuasive argument..

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:


Help you develop knowledge in the area of cognitive psychology.
Help you learn to evaluate and use your knowledge of cognitive psychology to form a persuasive argument.


The learning and teaching methods include:


Lectures (11 weeks, 2 hours each week)
In-class discussion and learning exercises
Research seminars

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate


an understanding of the nature and scope of research on cognitive psychology
an awareness of the theoretical approaches that have been used to describe and explain behaviour in this domain
an ability to present evidence of reasoning and analytical skills that will enable them to write a persuasive research proposal


Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:


A 6-page research proposal (assessing learning outcomes 1, 2 & 3) (50%)
A one-hour essay exam (assessing learning outcomes 1, 2, & 3) (50%)


Formative assessment

Students will receive written formative feedback on an optional abstract assignment in which they write a summary of their planned research proposal.

Feedback

Students will receive verbal feedback on their performance during the module through in class discussion, written feedback on their optional formative abstract assignment and written feedback on the 6-page research proposal.
