Module overview

The intention of this course is to present an overview of many important design,
manufacture and performance issues relevant to the use of composite materials in a wide range of applications, including an introduction to the use of finite-element analysis for composites, the importance of product standards, recycling and green issues.

Module content

Content includes:
The course, consisting of lectures and exercise classes, includes the following topics
• Design lectures:
Review of basic composite mechanics; mechanical design criteria; failure criteria for design; composite design; principles of joining and repair; finite-element analysis: basic principles; finite-element analysis and composite materials; design tools and product standards

• Manufacture lectures:
Reinforcements and matrices; processing of composite materials; textile composites: manufacture and behaviour; manufacture of large composite structures; an introduction to recycling, sustainability and green issues

• Performance lectures:
Fatigue and delamination issues for composite materials; non-destructive evaluation for composite structures; bridges, bridge strengthening and repair; repair case studies: aircraft, pipework, pressure vessels; optical sensors for strain and damage monitoring; commercial perspectives; composites in the civil infrastructure and aerospace.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to introduce the fundamentals of composite materials through lectures, tutorials (including worked example classes) and practical classes. This is delivered through lectures and tutorial classes.

The learning and teaching methods include:
• 23 hours lectures
• 7 hours tutorial classes (all students)
• 30 hours coursework

The teaching is delivered as a one-week intensive course.

Assessment Strategy

The 5 short questions are able to test knowledge and understanding of a broad range of topics covered in the module. The longer question focusses on different aspects of the complex selection-design-property-manufacture relationships for composite materials. With incomplete information, students are required to identify, select and evaluate solutions for a range of actual or potential composite applications at the forefront of professional practice.

Thus, the summative assessment for this unit consists of:
• Q1 (Short answer questions) 50%
• Q2 (Essay question) 50%

This module only runs once every two years. Students who temporarily withdraw or who are granted extenuating circumstances after attending the intensive week will be issued with a new assessment/s as appropriate.
