Prerequisites / Co-requisites
Students will be expected to attend warm-up sessions and arrive appropriately prepared for physical work. Detailed and extensive research and preparation will be necessary in pursuit of the modules aims and objectives.
A weighted aggregate mark of 40% is required to pass the module.
During the first half of the semester, students will work with a tutor/director on scenes from Naturalistic texts. The scenes will be presented at the end of the rehearsal period to a student audience.
During the second half of the semester, students will work with a Tutor/Director on scenes from a 20th century American Realist text. The scenes will be presented at the end of the rehearsal period to a student audience.

Indicative content includes:
Scenes for the first half of the semester will be selected from plays by writers including, but not necessarily limited to, the following: Anton Chekov, Henrik Ibsen, August Strindberg, George Bernard Shaw and Harley Granville-Barker.
Scenes for the second half of the semester will be selected from plays by writers including, but not necessarily limited to, the following: Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Eugene O’Neil, David Mamet and Sam Shepherd.
In both projects, scenes will be selected and cast by the Tutor in consultation with the Programme Leader, to give specific challenges to the particular group of students.
The focus of the module is on the process of the actor. The presentation of the scenes at the end of the project is designed to give a finishing point. However, it is important to note that the scene presentation is of work in progress and is not, at this stage of the programme, separately assessed.
Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Focus the student on the process of the actor in preparation and rehearsal.
Give a practical text-based application for work covered in Semester 1.
Give students an experience of rehearsal room etiquette and approaches.
The learning and teaching methods include:
12 hours workshops/rehearsals per week for 12 weeks of semester 2.
